A small story about web-site development

Post by sudip »

Hello Friends,

Yesterday I rejected an order for a small web site development. The person, who took the order for me told the the client - this would be developed with Dreamweaver, MS SQL Server, ASP ... I immediately canceled the order ;) (after telling the marketing friend, cost of development would be much higher by using these tools legally)

I last developed web site 11 years back! It was an e-commerce site. The shopping cart and other parts were developed using Java Script calling CGI-Perl codes and small dose of Java. Data was stored in text files. And, the development team has only one member - my employer took only one person like - Jack of all trades! ;)

Our main product was book. I have to maintain a large table along with authors, rates etc. So I created a small app with VFP which was used to create html files (with embedded JavaScript codes) from the dbf files. Very simple and basic, but it worked ... ;) (all the codes were lost, when I left the job)

Today, things have been changed. If I want to create a similar web site today what should I need? I have very small experience about modern web site development. If I am not wrong I shall use HMGScript, PHP, MySQL etc.

Can anyone tell me more about this?

Thanks in advance :)

Why can't you try Joomla or Drupal?

Apart from this, there are n number of open source CMS and e-Commerce sites available. We have to choose according to our requirements. That's all. :)
East or West HMG is the Best.
South or North HMG is worth.
...the possibilities are endless.

Today is by far more expensive developing Web Apps than desktop ones due to the need to master 3 or 4 languajes to achieve a single task (total nonsense).
Other than that html, javascript and cgi are the same since years now.
So using harbour for the cgi part isn´t a bad idea at all.
The most difficult part for us developpers, is the aesthetics requirementents of Graphic Design.

Hello All,

Thank you for your support :) Daliel, I went through the site. It's very good. :)

I need a total restart for web development. ;)

I am now looking for a simple start-up tutorial for that. Moreover, I want to use my basic knowledge of HMG in this field. :)

Sudip

Excellent initiative Sudip! Please share your valuable experience as you proceed further. It will help us who also wants a first hand experience on website development with little knowledge about other platforms then our xbase and Harbour/xHarbour and HMG.

How can we use HMG here will be an interesting thing.....

[Rathi has perhaps used Joomla for his site...]
