Hello Friends,

We all try to create software bug free.

We always dream for a software which will run many years without our help to end users.

But, is it good for software business?

Today, I came to know that one of my old Clipper based software still running in one of my client's place more than 10 years! It's not a big news. (But, IMHO it may not run if I developed it with some other software tools.)

It's an eye-opener to me. Now I understand, why VB.Net 2005 has installation problems on Windows 7!!! Yes, my special thanks to MS for this lesson of business

IMHO, it shall not be seen in this angle.

We have to constantly develop the software to make it further marketable.

By the way, congrats for writing a nice software even before 10 years.

Dear Sudip/ Rathinagiri,

In my humble opinion, any good software, over a period of time, will always require some amount of improvement, based on user inputs and/or as required by some change in the statutary requriements or even change in the business atmosphere.

Such oppurtunities, can also be used to enhance the original software using latest tools available at that time. The client also does not mind paying, since he is already using the software and would welcome such changes which would lead to increased productivity.

I wrote a lot of Clipper apps 10 (and more) years ago too (and some of them still working without problems - on Win98 comps and with matrix printers [not all Russian hospitals is so rich to update their hardware every year ] ; and users say: "it's simple, it's working - then it's good!").

My view for this theme is:
If I see new features for my app - I can add it to new release and say to users: "Who want to pay me little money for that?"... (or I know how to expand my app for working on new - or other than Win [Linux etc] - OSes... or something else)... I think in all of this cases I can found user (and not only one I think ) who'll tell me: "WOW!! It's exactly what I want!!" And this is my "business way"

And HMG-way (or Harbour-way) is one of best for it!

P.S. I still love to play in "ancient" DOS-game "Sherlock" (to solve puzzles 6x6, 1991, by Everett Kaser, only 75k in zip! do you know it?). It's simple, it's working, "gameplay" is good?.. and it's enough for me!
