Very strange... web apps, are usually very fast (at least when using standard AMP technology)... but if not... I'll could bet on a problem with the server software (not the network infrastructure).

That's kinda lie.
What MS have done is to include an almost full WIN OS in SQLSERVER runtime.
It's like a virtual machine on top of linux, runing SQLSERVER.
