Very interesting...

Windows is becoming less and less relevant, because developers are moving quickly to web technologies, even for companies internal use software.

As the article states, MS already lost the battle.

In my case (as I've already commented) I'm still using Windows, for HMG development (maintenance) only.

This is hard to say for me, but, all my new developments are HTML/JavaScript/MySql (MariaDB)' based.

In the same work environment, I have clients with iPads, iPhones, Android Phones, MacBooks and Windows desktops. A web app works for all of them. Otherwise, I should create separate clients for each platform (a true nightmare :D ).

Developing new Windows-only apps today, is completely non-sense (with a few exceptions).
Regards/Saludos,

Roberto

That is the naked truth Roberto.
East or West HMG is the Best.
South or North HMG is worth.
...the possibilities are endless.

I really can't imagine working on an iPad or some hackable 'Smart'-Phone (with keys as small as possible) for real processing big stuff...

It depends from country where do you live.
Almost all computers in Polish business work with windows. I didn't meet any with linux or apple. Apples are used by snobs to watch over internet :-D

Only alternatives not Linux and Apple-OS; footsteps of Android / Chrome OS are approaching ;)

Marek, Serge,

Of course, data-entry for complex forms will still be done on desktop machines (now, mainly Windows) but as development moves to web technologies, even for desktops, Windows will be no longer needed, as the only requeriment for a client machine will be a web browser.

Simple data entry and reports can be done perfectly on mobile devices.

In fact, currently, one of my web apps, allows to salesmen to take orders and
record payments online. They uses Android tablets for that. No windows required.

Android tablets are cheap, light and with long battery autonomy.... By the other hand, Windows-Intel machines??? :)
Regards/Saludos,

Roberto

That is great Roberto.

Payments online? So you use https and payment gateway?

I was not clear enough.

The app does not handle money transfers, but records the payments that the salesmen receives, on the account of the customer.

This is done on customer's location. This is the reason because I've selected Android tablets (Samsung Galaxy Tab 3) with excellent results.

I've done this with a customized HMGSCRIPT version, because the development started prior to JMG.
